CHICAGO (Dow Jones) - The school district in the nation's third largest cancel classes on Wednesday before the storm is expected to fall to two feet of snow on Chicago.

Chicago Public Schools officials say they do not threaten the safety of students and staff.

The district's interim CEO, Mazany Terry, made the announcement Tuesday afternoon. He said the decision was based on forecasts of heavy snow continued all evening and night.

Officials say that all school programs and activities after school are also canceled.

The snowstorm bearing on the city has already forced the airline to stop flights to the city's two major airports and has asked retailers to stop downtown stores beginning.

Wednesday closing is scheduled for the first Chicago Public Schools since January 1999.
