Authorities confirm 5 Dead in Allentown explosion - Los Angeles Times

Five people - including a 4-month old boy - were killed in gas explosion and fire massive Allentown authorities confirmed at a press conference Thursday afternoon.

Research teams have four of the five victims and the recovery further.

Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim refused to the dead whose bodies have been recovered for identification, described as a 79 year old man, a woman of 69 years, a 16 year old daughter and a baby of four months.

Grim said search dogs were used to find the fifth victim.

Family members and friends have confirmed that the dead: William Hall, 79, and his wife, Beatrice 74, of 544 N. 13. St., Ofelia and Ben, 69, Catherine Cruz, 16, and Matthew Manuel Cruz, 4 months, of 542 N. 13. St.

About a dozen people were injured and more than 350 were forced to evacuate surrounding blocks and the crude Towers Senior citizens apartment complex, when a gas leak apparent at 544 N. 13. St. 10.45 clock from Wednesday.

"I want to express our deepest sympathy for those who have lost loved ones to expand," said Mayor Ed Pawlowski press conference afternoon, adding that the city and social institutions are ready to provide "day and night."

The mayor said two properties have been razed to the ground by the blast and six others must be demolished, and a total of 47 properties, including 10 businesses were damaged.

The mayor said that victims have the greatest need, "U.S. dollars", and urged those who help us call the American Red Cross of Greater Lehigh Valley.

About 70 people were displaced probably long term. All residents of the towers are gone home.

At a press conference yesterday morning, said Fire Chief Robert Scheirer Allentown no reports of gas odors preceded the explosion. UGI officials said they are still investigating, but said a team discovered early in the week no leaks in the region during a routine check.

"I think we're assuming there will be a gas explosion, but it has not been confirmed to be the case," Joseph Swope, a company spokesman said earlier.

Swope said the pressure of 12 inches low principal was involved in the incident without a history of absconding.

The utility uses the foam on the gas line at both ends of an area of about 03.45 Thursday to block seal clock. Swope said it took time for crews to cut through the concrete under the steel floor.

Stunned neighbors described for words, said the explosion was heard for miles.

Antonio Arroyo, his house at 530 N. 13. St. lost in the fire which he said was certain that a bomb had exploded.

"I thought it was the war to our doorstep," said Ms Arroyo was to check his e-mail, as the force of the explosion slammed him for his computer and tapped him on the floor. All windows his house and blew his front door was pushed

Arroyo Thursday morning sobbed and hugged his wife, Jill, as the watch for hours, the flames consumed his home described. He did not leave until the fire was extinguished.

"I prefer to accept what just happened to hear instead of someone you've lost everything," he said.
