New York, March 5 (ANI): A basketball player of 16 years in the U.S. Michigan broke on the ground shortly after hitting the winning basket, and died several hours later.
According to the New York Daily News, Wes Leonardo Fennville High School went into cardiac arrest after the game.
Leonard, who scored over 1,000 career points, had just sunk the winning layup in a 57-55 victory to round Bridgman Bees Fenville 20-0 season.
He was transported to Holland Hospital at 09:20 clock, on Thursday and doctors were able to start his new heart, said a hospital spokesman. He was pronounced dead at 10:40 hours
David A. Click Start, the chief medical examiner for Ottawa County, said the cause of death was "cardiac arrest due to dilated cardiomyopathy, or heart enlargement.
Start said, it is unclear how Leonard developed heart disease.
The incident brings a renewed interest in the safety of high school athletes - if students are adequately screened for heart problems, and use of the importance of adequate medical facilities and trained personnel to obtain emergencies.
